Thanks for the reply - yeah the lever compresses with very little resistance. I bled the brake line for quite a while though and I'm pretty sure that air isn't in the lines. The Clymer manual says to pump the lever "as many times as needed" in order to build up enough pressure in the system - so I pumped it quite a bit. Still not sure what is wrong - I seem to have put everything back together correctly and such. very confusing....
